Ulangi is an island off the southeastern coast of Sapience. The best way to get there is to go to the city of Esterport and take the ferry there. Ulangi itself is a large forested mountain which once contained a colony of Horkval and a swamp with a colony of Grook on the other side. The two colonies feuded with one another, until the Horkval gained an upper hand on the Grook and, in their zeal to conquer Ulangi, rendered the island thoroughly uninhabitable and forced both races to scatter throughout the nearby archipelago and eastern mainland. Now the island has been scoured clean of life, leaving only petrified trees and a thick carpet of ash in the wake of the devastating and fruitless war.
The Destruction of Ulangi
On the 25th of Ios, in the year 428 MA a terrible psychic weapon of General Kr'tachi destroyed most of the island. Thankfully, the swift actions of Enorianite warriors earlier in the crisis preserved the lives of both the Grook villagers and a breeding pair of Ulangi Horkval, allowing both races a thread of hope for their survival. With Ulangi reduced to a petrified monument to Kr'tachi's hubris, it remains to be seen where these disparate peoples will find a new home.
Geography
The northern half of Ulangi is dominated by a boggy marsh. Within this northern marshland may be found grook villages. The centre of the island is a stand of mountains, in the middle of which is an extinct volcano. Deep within the crevices of the dead volcano dwells the bustling mecca of Horkvali activity known as their hive.
An expansive forest spans Ulangi's southern half. It is home to a variety of wildlife. The treeline extends upward onto the cliffs of the isle's extinct volcano, creating a misty cloud forest which is so steep, it may be only be reached by trekking through the mountains. Animals that have made their homes here include deer like the elusive King Stag, bobcats, pheasants, and badgers. Many species of trees constitute this forest, mostly evergreen but with some deciduous, and include maple, oak, pine, fir, cedar, and dogwood.
